Bayer Leverkusen secured their second win of the season with a convincing 2-0 victory over Mainz 05 at the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday night.

The match was a tight affair from start to finish as both teams struggled to create many clear-cut chances. However, it was Bayer Leverkusen who ultimately broke the deadlock early in the second half through a header from substitute Kevin Volland.

Just four minutes later, the visitors doubled their lead thanks to a well-taken goal from substitute Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The Gabonese forward showed great composure in front of goal to slot home from close range.

Mainz 05 were unable to respond to the deficit and were eventually relegated to second-tier football following their relegation to the Bundesliga last season.

This result is a significant boost for Bayer Leverkusen, who have now won all three of their games this season. They currently sit top of the table and will be looking to continue their impressive form when they host Union Berlin next week.

In contrast, Mainz 05 will be disappointed with their defeat but can take heart from the fact that they have already qualified for European football this season. They will need to improve their defensive record if they want to avoid being relegated again next year.
